The Cathedral Quartet started humbly in 1964 as part of Rex Humbard’s thriving television outreach. They became a smoothly functioning musical unit, featuring George Younce’s powerful bass voice and Glen Payne’s lead vocals. Equally popular was the trademark humorous exchanges between Younce and Payne. In 1969, The Cathedrals branched out to form their own full time music ministry. Throughout the years, they won numerous Dove Awards, Grammy Awards, and Singing News Fan Awards. The group continued to record and tour until their retirement at the end of 1999.
The Cathedrals had some of the great names in Southern Gospel as members who are now part of their top groups, including Roger Bennett (Legacy Five), Gerald Wolfe (Greater Vision), and Mark Trammell (Mark Trammell Trio). But Glen and George’s influence was not limited to the arena of music. Mark Trammell said best; “It was things like Glen and George living the life in front of us, not only talking the talk but walking the walk.”
The Cathedrals are considered to be one of the most popular and top selling legendary groups of all time. In the last 5 years of their 35 year ministry, after SoundScan started reporting, the Cathedrals scanned over 1.5 million units. Unlike most Cathedral compilations, New Haven is assembling the quartet’s best songs from all their labels, and have never been compiled together. The #1 quartet and this best of the best retrospective make the Cathedral Classics a guaranteed best seller.
